Creamy Poppy Seed Dressing with Berry Salad
Sweet, tangy and super creamy, this Poppy Seed dressing goes perfect with our berry salad for a side dish no one can resist!
Creamy Poppy Seed Dressing
It seems like salad is one of those foods kids have a hard time eating. Maybe because its lot of veggies all together in a big bowl. Maybe it’s because salad has been labeled as ‘one of those foods you have to eat before you have dessert’. Whatever the reason, we have found that having a yummy salad dressing with your salad makes it way more likely for kids to eat salad.
This Creamy Poppy Seed Dressing is a great way to introduce and help kids learn to love salad. It has just the right amount of tang, but is mostly sweet with appeals to both kids and adults! And there is compelling research that shows that parents eating and enjoying food has a bigger impact than most other ways of getting your kids to eat.
“One study, using sliced bell peppers, found that bribing, cajoling, exhorting, and even rewarding kids for trying new vegetables are less effective than simply eating them yourself. Just sit down and eat yourself, and talk about how good it tastes. It will have a much bigger impact than if you give them a lecture.” Lorraine Stern.

Making homemade salad dressing is so easy! There really are only two steps:

- Refrigerate until ready to serve salad. The longer you refrigerate, the most flavorful your dressing will be.

- Add berries on top in groups for a pretty display.
- Add feta cheese and pecans on top of berries.
- Serve with your poppy seed dressing and enjoy!
Commonly Asked Questions about Making Poppy Seed Dressing and Berry Salad
- Can I substitute mayonnaise for the Greek yogurt in the dressing? Yes! There will be a slight flavor difference because mayo is less tangy that Greek yogurt.
- What can I use instead of feta cheese in the salad? Because this is a sweet salad, I would recommend using a more milk tasting cheese. Goat cheese, ricotta or rinsed cottage cheese would work well.
- How far in advance can I make the salad dressing? The poppy seed dressing will stay good in your fridge for up to 5 days.

Always looking for new salad recipes to make for the kids. Just wondering about the dressing, do you think it would taste ok to replace the Miracle Whip with mayo (but use less of) or plain greek yogurt?
Oh definitely! I think salad dressings are so forgiving. I hardly ever do the same thing twice!

Oh, that salad is to die for! What is it about spinach and berries and poppy seed dressing that make me salivate? I will definitely be trying this one!
(And yay for Nate!)
Hello, I check your new stuff daily. Your
writing style is witty, keep doing what you’re doing!
Nice post. I was checking continuoously this blog and
I am impressed! Very useful information specially the last part 🙂 I care
for such information a lot. I was looking for this particular information for a very long time.
Thank you and best of luck.
No offense or nothing personal but I’ve never been able to understand anyone wanting to ruin a healthy salad with a “toxic” dressing
I’ve been making an AMAZING Poppy Seed dressing
For years that is Outstanding & consists of all healthy ingredients :
Play with the proportions
Olive oil (or u can chose another oil)
Apple Cider vinegar
Honey (or experiment with different sweeteners)
Poopy seeds
Pinch of mustard powder
Blend on high speed ( will turn whiteish in color )
Love this salad! Used plain greek yogurt, instead of mayo, for the dressing and it was amazing! Also here in England, I found an awesome goat and sheep cheese feta at my local grocery- not overly salty like most American feta cheese that you can find, and more mild to the taste.
I love goat cheese @Lindsay!
Do you think Parmesan would work with this? MY family is not a fan of feta or goat cheese…much to my dismay.
I actually don’t think Parmesan would taste right Dorian- Parmesan is more salty, and this is a sweet salad. You can try it, but I’d just leave the cheese out altogether rather than sub the parmesan.
Goodluck!
I replaced the mayonaise with greek yogurt, and this has been a major hit!
It looks sooo delicious but that seems like A LOT of sugar and not very healthy. Have you tried making it without the sugar?
You can definitely cut back on the sugar! We have done that many times. We haven’t made it without any sugar- if you do, please let us know how it turns out for you!
