Smoothie Recipes: Green Smoothie Kids

Our green smoothies have never been actually green.  I wimp out in the spinach department, and I love dark colored berries.  However when reader Venessa sent us the recipe she got from her friend Natalie, we had to try it!

Green Smoothie

  • 3 cups packed baby spinach
  • 2 cups frozen peaches
  • 1 cup frozen mango  (or use fresh or more peaches)
  • 1/2 cup skim milk
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 scoop EAS vanilla protein powder
  • 1 cup vanilla Light and Fit Dannon yogurt   ( I used plain)
  • 1 block silken tofu (I left this out)

serving size: 16 oz
3 servings
224 calories

DSC_1519 image I cut the recipe in half due to the size of my blender.  Remember when I bought the blender and thought it was so awesome and that I didn't "need no stinkin Blend-tec." Well, I was wrong. The blender is already cracked!  I really do need a Blend-tec!!

Anyway, back to the point.  Delicious smoothie! TJ here had 4 dixie cups worth.  I love the extra protein from the protein powder, tofu, milk, and yogurt.  I love the good carbs from the fruit and the juice.  An altogether great mix!

Does it still taste good? Like can you taste the spinach? The last time I made a green smoothie for my kids we all thought it was disgusting, lol!

You definitely couldn't taste the spinach. Mostly you could taste the orange juice. The girl that emailed it to me, her family thought it tasted like an orange Julius. We used plain yogurt rather than vanilla, so ours wasn't as sweet as an Orange Julius, but still good. It could have been a little sweeter though.

I love smoothies and I have yet to try a real green smoothie. In the past, I have only put in a tiny, undetectable amount of spinach. I'm going to try this, and I'll probably love it, but I think I will faint if my children drink it!

hi there. i'm new to all of this (and your site- it's fantastic!), but was wondering of about using protein powder for children...? i was under the impression that it's not a good idea. can anyone tell me otherwise?

Thanks for your question Maria. Here are my thoughts on protein powders: Any excess protein we consume is filtered through our kidneys to be excreted. For kids, this may put an unhealthy strain on their kidneys, if the protein is in excess. So, the only times protein powder may be beneficial for kids is when calories are extra low because they aren't eating, or they are being really picky. But, bottom line is most kids don't need extra protein. I probably wouldn't use a supplement for protein in most kids under 8 years old to be safe.
