Honey Lemon Cold Remedy

It seems like it is that time of year when EVERYONE is sick.  Literally almost everyone I know has been hit with some kind of illness the past month.  At our house it has been colds, coughs, runny noses, pink eye, ear infections and worst of all sore throat! The worst thing about having a cold/cough/sniffles/sore throat is that if you go to the doctor, even if you feel like you might die,  they will say the same thing to you.  I'm sorry, this is a virus and there really isn't anything we can do. Just try and treat the symptoms.  Treat the symptoms?  Boo.  In fact, I went to the doctor just this morning because I was SURE I had strep.  I mean, it is just not possible to have a sore throat this bad for 3 days and have no sign of improvement, right?  Wrong.  When the doctor said the usual virus speech  I wanted to give him a virus!  He then began to tell me to take Ibuprofen to manage the pain.......oh wait, you are pregnant?  Well, there is a prescription numbing spray that will numb your throat for 20 minutes.  20 minutes?  No thanks.  I decided I needed and soothing.  And all natur-al.

I was doing some reading about honey the other day.  I read a research article where they gave 105 children with colds either honey, honey-flavored cough medicine or no treatment. All of the children got better, but honey consistently scored best in parents' rating of their children's cough symptoms.  The researchers said that honey may work by coating and soothing an irritated throat and it’s believed to have antioxidant and antibacterial effects. Dark-colored honey, such as buckwheat honey used in the study, is particularly high in antioxidants.

Just make sure if you are going to give honey to a child, that they are older than 12 months old. *Honey should not be given to babies younger than 12 months. *

My little two-year old has had a cough and sniffles as well, but there really isn't any medication I can give her.  I whipped up this natural cold remedy and we both sipped it this afternoon and it really hit the spot.  It is so simple that even when you are in dire straits you will be able to make this.   The honey is sweet and the lemon provides the refreshing zing of citrus.  Next time you are feeling under the weather, make up a mug and cheers to better health!

Honey Lemon Cold Remedy

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  1. Heat water on the stove, or in a microwave-safe mug.
  2. Add honey and lemon juice to the heated water, mixing until honey is dissolved.
  3. Test with a spoon before sipping to make sure it isn't too hot.

I've been using honey-lemon for cold symptom relief for years. It does really seem to help, whether it's the heat and steam from the cup, the soothing honey, or the astringency of the lemon (cut through mucus?), I feel better for a short time after sipping on a mug-full. My kids ask for it when they're sick, too. Our family has honey-lemon-plus, too, for nighttime - make as above and add some whiskey ;-) Not for pregnant women or kids, but much nicer than Nyquil, LOL.

We've used lemon-honey "tea" for colds for as long as I can remember. Sooo soothing. Whenever I get a cold, that's the first thing I crave. I read somewhere that local grown honey is also good for allergies. Hmm....

Oh, cool. I've used Honey and water. I've used lemon and club soda before. But I never thought about putting together honey and lemon and water. Neat. Thanks for the tip.

I have used lemon flavored tea and honey, and that helps. I can only imagine how this recipe would help even more. I love simple remedies using natural ingredients that are always in my cabinets. I also love how you point out how it can benefit small children who cannot use most medications. What a great way to feel good about what you are giving your child to help give them relief.

My mom use to give this to me when I was young and I now use it on my kids. Now when they have a cough they always ask for honey. The BEST natural remedy. :)

Yes. I couldn't agree more that the virus thing is so frustrating, but at the same time, I'm glad it's not puke! But, that's just me. I love to drink honey lemon tea when my throat hurts and if I really want it to have kick I grate some fresh ginger and sprinkle some cayenne pepper in it. What can it hurt? I also gargle warm salt water and that feels good. I hope you are all feeling better.

I tried this yesterday, it tastes soooo good. I even shared it with my daughter (she is 14 months now). I think it is a great juice replacement option, it boosts immunity for kids and if you use honey from the region that you live in, it can minimize allergies. Just FYI for all, I asked the doctor today and he said that at my baby's age the honey doesn't have to be pasteurized. Thank you for the recipe.

Love this recipe.. Was wondering how often should I drink it for my horrible cold?

It won't cure your cold, so I would say just drink it as often as you feel you need some soothing relief! Feel better!
