I believe that if you let your kids help prepare a dish, they are much more likely to eat it and enjoy it. Yes it is definitely more work for you, but isn’t the statement “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime” so true?
Teaching your kids, and allowing them to help in the kitchen can help shape their attitude and knowledge about food. My 3 year old is really into peeling vegetables right now. She thinks it is as much fun as playing dress-ups or going to the park. So I am going to take advantage of that while I can! Today we made Parmesan Basil Fries. So good. I mean, really delicious.
First thing, peel your potatoes. (Or let your kids do it – even better!)
Slice your potatoes into 1/4″ slices.
Then you can either use a cookie cutter, or a food cutter like this Fun Bites cutter to make a variety of shapes. Try to make sure your pieces are all about the same size so they will cook evenly.
Place the cutter over the potato and press.
Your kids can help with this part too! It is really easy and fun to make different shapes.
Once you have your shapes cut out, spray them with Olive Oil or Cooking spray.
Then place them in a bag with grated parmesan cheese and basil. Let your kids shake it up until all of the pieces are coated. (Sorry about the blurry picture – she was really taking the shaking job seriously)
Place them on top of a cooling rack (spray it with cooking spray first) Then put the rack on a baking tray.
Bake at 425 degrees F for 15-20 minutes – until golden. You can lay your fries out on a plate……
Or stack them with toothpicks.
They are delicious, healthy and cute enough to serve at a tea party, but substantial enough to have as a side to your turkey burger!
My 3 year old ate these up like there was no tomorrow! The great thing is that they are super fast and easy to make, so I whipped up another batch without batting an eye.
