Cherry Pineapple Smoothie for Kids

This winter has been pretty mild, but it has just started to get cold.  The funny thing about the cold is that I just don’t think it effects kids like it does adults.  Even though it is freezing, every morning this past week my daughter has requested a smoothie. Because it is harder to eat fruits and veggies in the Winter I have been all about the smoothie.  We love frozen fruit because it is flash frozen right after it is picked. That means it has has as many nutrients and as much flavor as fresh!  Our smoothie of choice lately has been a Cherry Pineapple Smoothie. It is citrus-y, delicious and packed full of vitamins. And let’s be honest – when the weather is cold, its grey and dreary outside, who doesn’t want to feel like they are in the tropics? And if you can’t be there, at least you can feel like you are eating something tropical.

Yum

Cherry Pineapple Smoothie for Kids. Smoothies in the winter are a great way to get your vitamins in when most fruits aren't in season.

For this smoothie, we used frozen cherries and frozen pineapple.  Both of them are sweet, but also give a bit of tang.  We even love to let them sit in a bowl and thaw for a minute and then just eat the fruit!  I also add 1/2 a frozen banana for a bit of sweetness.

Then I put in a splash of orange juice and Greek yogurt. Blend and enjoy!  We love the flavor of cherry and also the beautiful color of pink it turns your smoothie!  Cherries say summer to me, and I love that we can still eat them in the Winter just frozen!

This smoothie takes just minutes to make and is a great breakfast, or even after school snack.  If your kids don’t like the texture of cherries, this is a great way to introduce them because they will most likely love the flavor! If you have extra, we like to pour them in our silicone ice pop molds and either refrigerate for a gogurt type snack, or freeze for a frozen treat!

Thanx for sharing your Polar Express story. I was in my daughter’s Kindergarten class today and was put in charge of stories. The kids kept choosing the Polar Express so I’d ask each group if any of them owned it. And you know what?! Only 2 did (one being my own child)! But just about every child (except mine) owned the movie. The teacher in me was so, so sad! These children have the MOVIE to treasure instead of the book, and like you said, the book is sooo magical and a classic. (and honestly, I’m not a huge fan of the movie anyway) So, I’m not sure what this rambling is about, but I’m so happy to hear you bought the book to share with your girls. Even if your 2-year-old was running around crazy, she’s still learning and listening (somewhat), and it’s making connections in her brain. It’s all a part of the pre-reading experience. (And that picture is precious!)

Would you be willing to help me find healthy lactose free recipes for my five year old. I am trying to get us all healthier. Thank you. Rhonda

My kids LOVE smoothies, but they always want something else to eat with it. They feel like a smoothie alone is not enough. If we’re having them in the morning I will usually serve nut butter toast, if at lunch then air popped popcorn. Any suggestions?

Those are 2 sides that we eat a lot with smoothies! You could also do a whole grain waffle or bagel with nut butter, crackers and cheese, or boiled egg with cheese squares. I try and pair it with foods that have protein and it seems to be more satisfying.

We love the following smoothie:
Fresh /frozen pineapple, frozen cherries, one banana, frozen blueberries, vanilla Greek yogurt and a can of coconut water….blend and enjoy…delicious!!!!
You can omit the yogurt and it’s delicious!

Love this smoothie recipe. I changed it a little because my granddaughter is vegan. Use plain almond or soy yogurt instead of Greek. It’s awesome.
