Tips for the Best Dirty Rice
Use Day-Old Rice
Cold leftover rice works especially well because it stays separate and does not become mushy in the skillet. Fresh rice works too, but let it cool slightly before using.
Dice the Carrots Small
Small carrot pieces cook more quickly and blend nicely into the rice, making this meal more appealing for younger kids.
Start Mild, Then Add Heat
Cajun seasoning blends vary a lot in spice level. Start with less seasoning if your family is sensitive to heat, then add more at the end for adults.
Use a Large Skillet
A large skillet gives the rice room to cook evenly and helps it get those lightly crisp, flavorful bits on the bottom.
Meal Prep and Storage
Store leftover dirty rice in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
To reheat, warm in a skillet with a splash of broth or water until heated through. You can also microwave individual portions in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval.
This recipe freezes well, too. Cool completely, transfer to freezer-safe containers, and freeze for up to 2 months.

Easy Variations
Make It With Sausage
Use ground breakfast sausage, chicken sausage, or smoked sausage for extra savory flavor.
Add More Vegetables
Try adding diced bell peppers, celery, zucchini, spinach, or chopped kale.
Make It Spicier
Add cayenne pepper, diced jalapeño, red pepper flakes, or your favorite hot sauce.
Use Brown Rice
Brown rice works well for a heartier whole-grain version. Just make sure it is already cooked before adding it to the skillet.
Add Beans
Stir in black beans, kidney beans, or pinto beans for extra fiber and plant-based protein.
