Robyn here from Real Food Whole Life with a question for you: Are you popping your own popcorn at home? If yes, you know it’s one of the best fast, easy and affordable kid-friendly snacks out there. And it you’re not, let me introduce you to one of our favorite ways to snack. Homemade popcorn is infinitely more tasty than the microwave kind, plus it’s free of the strange chemicals, preservatives, flavors and colors that can come with microwave popcorn.

Popping at home is easy: just heat a bit of oil in a medium saucepan, add some popcorn kernels, cover, and wait a few minutes while the corn pops to perfection. You can eat the popcorn plain with a bit of salt sprinkled over for flavor. Or, you can get creative with the toppings, inviting your kids into the kitchen to help. Our family LOVES this snickerdoodle topping in particular, and my daughter enjoys participating in the prep process by pouring the topping, mixing it all together, and sprinkling on the salt.

I use coconut oil in this recipe, both to pop the corn and in the topping, because it’s one of our family members is dairy-free, but feel free to substitute butter if you prefer. You can also double the topping for a sweeter, sticker popcorn. The final result reminds me of snickerdoodle cookies, but with much less work and with more fiber and less sugar. We love this as an after school snack, for a post-dinner treat, or for packing in lunch boxes. Any way you go, it’s good!
