Slow Cooker / Instant Pot Turkey Bolognese

A healthier version of a classic recipe, bolognese sauce! This Slow Cooker Turkey Bolognese is packed with flavor and perfect to top any pasta.

  • 1 medium carrot
  • 1 stalk celery
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste, canned
  • 1 teaspoon thyme, dried
  • 1 teaspoon oregano, dried
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper, ground
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth, low-sodium
  • 2 lb turkey, ground
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 56 ounce crushed tomatoes, canned


Slow Cooker Instructions

  • Finely dice carrot, celery and onion.  Add to a large saucepan with olive oil.  Cook for 5 minutes and then add minced garlic, tomato paste, thyme, oregano, salt and pepper . Cook for 2 minutes and add chicken broth. Stir well.
  • Transfer to your slow cooker.
  • In the same saucepan, add the ground turkey.  Use a wooden spoon to break up the meat into small pieces.  Once browned, add the milk. Let it absorb into the turkey.  This should take a few minutes. Transfer to the slow cooker.
  • Add crushed tomatoes; stir well to combine.
  • Cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-6 hours.  Serve over pasta.

Instant Pot Instructions

  • Turn Instant Pot to saute.  Add diced carrot, celery and onion.  Cook for 5 minutes and then add minced garlic, tomato paste, thyme, oregano, salt and pepper.  Mix well.
  • Add the remainder of the ingredients, chicken broth, ground turkey, milk, and crushed tomatoes.  Mix well making sure to break up the ground turkey.
  • Set to Meat/Stew setting for 35 minutes.  Close the lid.
  • When the time is up, let it natural pressure release for 5 minutes.
  • Remove the lid and stir.  Serve over pasta.
