  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line an 8x8-inch pan with parchment paper.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter, stirring constantly. Continue cooking until it foams, turns golden brown, and smells nutty-- about 5-8 minutes. Remove from heat immediately and transfer to a bowl.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together browned butter and brown sugar for about 2 minutes. Add egg and vanilla, mixing until smooth.
  • Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix just until combined. Fold in chopped apples.
  • Spread thick batter evenly into prepared pan. Bake for 25–28 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Allow to cool before slicing into squares.
