Healthy Hot Cocoa

Yesterday it practically felt like summer, and this morning we woke up to a pile of snow!  Of course being the slave driver I am, I sent my kids out at the crack of dawn to start shoveling.  I hope we never buy a snow blower. (at least until the kids are grown, then we can buy one 🙂 )Healthy Hot Cocoa. Finally! A tasty alternative to a holiday classic!

Once inside, they were ready for some hot cocoa!  Here is our healthy version:

  • 1 cup low fat milk
  • 1 TBL Agave syrup (or honey)  (if your kids are used to Nesquik or other sweeter cocoas, you may want to use 2 TBL
  • 2 TBL cocoa powder  (the 100% cocoa powder)
  • Mix together over the stove, or in the microwave until warm and dissolved.

  • Although it contains a little saturated fat, research is showing it may not block LDL receptors the way saturated fat from animal sources do!!
  • Cocoa contains phytochemicals that can help your heart, skin, vision, etc.

So, go enjoy the last few days of winter (crossing my fingers) and relax with your kids and some cocoa!

P.S. One of my first posts was about how TJ was completely addicted to Nesquik!  He truly drank it every day!

I was sooooo bummed when I realized that almost every store bought hot chocolate has trans fat in it! Who would have thought? My husband likes to make a big batch of Alton Brown’s hot chocolate mix. Alton Brown’s mix is not quite creamy enough for me (though my hubby thinks it’s divine), so I’m excited to give yours a try!

I also stopped using instant cocoa mixes (and creamers) when I read the ingredients and saw the trans fat.

It’s nice to be able to control the amount of cocoa-sugar ratio. I haven’t tried the agave, yet.

I hope we’re past cocoa time for this year. I won’t buy the packaged mixes or make any w/ creamers but the kids just like the healthier ones “okay”. Frustrating.

This is the way we love our cocoa! The processed mixes are way too sweet, I can hardly taste the chocolate. For myself I use my Vanilla Stevia drops…oh my, so decadent in flavor with no sugar. Maple & agave are great too!
Thanks for stopping by FFC earlier today! Do you live near Maria?
