When I was pregnant with my first, I really wanted a boy. I look back and think how naive I was being, but in my mind I was a ‘boy’ mom. I really just could not envision myself dressing up a little girl with bows, and frills, and all of the cute things that come with a girl.
And then Amelia was born. She was born with the most girly girl instincts known to the world of girls. And now I couldn’t love it more. I love that she wants to wear dresses and bows all of the time. I love painting nails, trying out different lipstick colors, and dreaming about American Girl Dolls. Oh and we love pink at our house! Which brings me to Valentines. Red, pink, purple………ah, the colors of love. All of the colors of beautiful vibrant berries.
If you were to think about a fruit that says Valentines, of course you would think of berries! And believe me, if you bring this to a party or get together, you will be very popular. I brought this to a Super Bowl party last weekend, and it was definitely the most well liked food……even beyond the wings and ribs.
The fun part about this platter is the food art! Lately I have been realizing the value of food art – beyond just having something pretty to look at. It really helps involve your kids in the kitchen and gets them excited about whatever you are making, and even more excited to eat it. Kids love pretty, colorful foods. And this particular creation is super easy and kids really can do this!
How To Make a Strawberry Flower
Begin by slicing a thin slice toward the outside of the strawberry on one side. After the first slice, you will turn the strawberry and make the same slice on each side.
After your 4th slice, you will slice the middle just like you sliced the outside on all four sides.
You will still have a core. Slice the top and the bottom of the strawberry off. Then you will ‘fluff’ the petals just enough to stand out a bit. And you are done! So simple – you could probably whip up an entire bouquet of these in 10 minutes!
Add these onto your platter to bring a fun element for Valentines!
