This Stewed Chicken and Veggie dish makes a great rainy day activity with your kids while give them an opportunity to cook dinner for the family.
Hi there! I am Toria from The Step Stool Chef and I am super, duper excited to be a member of the Super Healthy Kids contributor team. My 7-year-old son and I share our journey of food family and love on our site where he is the Chef and I am his assistant, Sous Chef Mommy. We feature a “kids teaching kids” approach to cooking that features easy to follow recipes for kids to try at home.
Today, I’m excited to share with you an easy way to get your kids to cook dinner for the family. It was pretty rainy this past weekend making it perfect comfort food weather. My little chef loves a great slow cooker recipe because he can prepare the meal fairly independently.
To make cooking with your kids as smooth as possible, I always encourage parents to think of it as any craft activity: 1) Pick out the recipe ahead of time and make sure you have all the ingredients 2) Lay out the ingredients to the recipe to make it easier for the little chef to follow the recipe and 3) Know that it will get a little messy. Slow cooker recipes make for the perfect kid cooking hack as they typically involve easy prep and minimal exposure to heat.
Next, cut and add the veggies to the slow cooker. Here we used baby potatoes so that it is easier to cut and eat. My little chef decided to use 7 baby potatoes as he said that’s his lucky number. The baby carrots required no cutting at all.
Then, add the herbs and spices to 4 cups of water. Also squeeze a half lemon in the herbal mixture.
