Amy and I are always talking about ways to get kids in the kitchen. We believe that teaching your kids to cook and learn kitchen skills, strongly encourages good eating habits that will stick with them long after they move out! The vegetable that I started letting my kids help prepare first is cucumbers! They have a soft skin making it easy to peel, and slice very easily also! Instead of ranch, we like to make this tangy cucumber dip that actually has cucumbers in it! We also love pita chips in this dip. Here is a recipe to make your own pita chips!
The key to letting your kids peel a cucumber is to have a good peeler. If it is super dull, or doesn’t slide easily. they are more likely to get hurt and they will be frustrated and possibly just give up. We have a few different peelers, but my favorite is pictured at the bottom of this post. My girls are 4 and 5 and had no trouble at all with the peeling step. You definitely don’t have to peel your cucumber, but it makes it easier to slice for kids.
This can be scary letting your kids cut food with a real knife for the first time. There is a great tutorial on teaching your kids how to use a knife from Eat Your Beets. I highly recommend reading it. Then proceed with the cutting. We like to cut our cucumbers into spears for easier dipping. Just slice the cucumber in half and then start slicing those pieces into a spear shape.
This step is pretty much intuitive. I have yet to meet a kid that doesn’t like to dip. According to a study performed by me, kids will eat 90% more veggies when they have a dip with it.
Kitchen Tools for Kids
- 1 cup plain greek yogurt
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp minced fresh dill
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 cucumber, peeled and diced small
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Mix cucumber and 1 teaspoon salt in small bowl; cover and chill 3 hours.
- In a small bowl, mix yogurt, lemon juice, dill and garlic. Squeeze out as much excess liquid as possible from cucumber and salt mixture. Stir cucumber into yogurt.
- Season with pepper and additional salt if needed.
- Cover and chill until ready to serve.
