Kids Favorite Black Bean Spider Dip

We love beans! Not only are they:

  • Healthy
  • inexpensive
  • shelf-stable
  • Delicious
  • Versatile
  • and my kids like it!!

BUT, they are filled with nutrients!  Those dark black beans are filled with phytonutrients, just like dark colorful fruits and vegetables! Black beans are also high in fiber, folate, tryptophan, manganese and more.  It is recommended that we consume around 4 cups of beans per week!  (source)  And, even more is better.

This Black Bean Dip is a super easy way to get a full cup of beans in!  In fact, I could just drink the stuff! haha.. Kids Favorite Black Bean Spider Dip. How to turn black beans into a festive dip!

We start with 1 cup of cooked black beans.  We either will use a can of black beans, or if we start from dry, we will cook them all day in the crockpot and use those, or freeze what we’ve cooked and use it straight from the freezer.

I do prefer to buy beans dry- they are super inexpensive, and they last forever! For this reason, we have hundreds of pounds of beans in storage!

Then, after we cook or defrost the black beans, we simply blend it up into our dip.  Either mash it with the back of a fork, or blend it in a food processor.

Then, comes the fun part- the add-ins!  With this dip, measurements aren’t necessary!   We add-in

  • Salsa
  • Salt
  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • sour cream
  • Cheese

Then, we warm it up! this tastes delicious warmed in the microwave! If you mashed, rather than pureed, mash again after you heat it up!

This would be a great appetizer to serve on Halloween, or really any time!  What other add-ins would you include?

I think the piped sour cream web is the pièce de résistance. Thanks for the great ideas!

Thanks, making this tomorrow 🙂

Amy says:

Oh gee! Not sure how I failed to reply! I used regular whole wheat tortillas that I cut with a bat cookie cutter. I sprayed with cooking spray, sprinkled with salt and baked at 400 for about 5 minutes!

Renee says:

I would love to know also how to make the bat chips.

Kim Gordon says:

So true. Beans can be one of the best foods for you. This looks like a great recipe and the presentation is fantastic!

Deanna says:

I love the bat tortilla chips too! Did you bake them? If so, for how long?

What a wonderful idea for Halloween! They won’t even know it’s good for them either.
