My family is really into peppermint patties! We get them from all types of specialty stores and we’re always on the hunt for the best ones. I love this recipe because it doesn’t have nearly as much sugar as the regular candies so I get to enjoy the holiday with my favorite treat and not feel like I need to hit the gym a few extra times. Your kids will love these because they can help you dip them! Just pull chairs up to the counter with a bowl of melted chocolate and they can use a fork to dip each candy in! They’ll love it! If you want to add a sprinkle of crushed candy canes or sprinkles on top for decoration, do it before the chocolate cools. Enjoy our Healthy Homemade Peppermint Patties with your family this Christmas!

How to Make Peppermint Patties

You first have to make the filling, which usually consists of lots of sugar, but ours doesn’t!

You freeze little “disks” of the filling and then dip them into chocolate. If you want your patties to turn out picture perfect, you need to have really pretty and smooth “disks.” Some of mine didn’t look too cute but they still tasted incredible!  Those were the ones I just had to taste test before I gave them to the neighbors.

Tips for Pretty Peppermint Patties:

Along with making sure the peppermint filling is smooth, you can also use thicker chocolate.  When the chocolate is thin the lumps and bumps in the filling show more, so if you only add just enough coconut oil to the chocolate chips to make it dip-able, they’ll turn out even prettier. This was a trick I learned while I was making them and it did make a big difference!

You can use dark or milk chocolate chips in this recipe. Peppermint patties are traditionally make with dark chocolate but if you’d like a sweeter patty, opt for milk chocolate chips.

  • Combine coconut oil, honey and peppermint extract.  Place in the freezer for 15-20 minutes or until firm enough to scoop out.
  • Scoop out and form little balls, then press flat into disks about the size of a silver dollar. Place in the freezer again for 15-20 minutes.
  • Melt dark chocolate chips and coconut oil together.  Dip frozen “disks” into the melted chocolate using a fork and place on parchment paper.  Place back into freezer to let set.  Enjoy!

I made these last week and brought them to a party of about 30, they loved them.

I am addicted to peppermint patties and needed to find something that had no white sugar. This is perfect for me. I just made another batch.

I bought a candy mold that is a bunch of disc shapes, so I scoop the filling into the molds and not flatten them out by hand.

Love the recipe and appreciate how easy it is for someone who doesn’t like to make desserts.

Do they have to be stored in the freezer or just set in the freezer? Won’t they get warm and melt if out and not eaten?

I am thinking these would work well in mini muffin cups. Has anyone tried piping in a small amount of chocolate, filling with the frozen peppermint disks and topping with more chocolate? Might be a problem though … might get mistake for homemade Reeses. Whoops!?!

I just made these with a mini muffin tin, and it worked great! Just popped out the disks and dipped in chocolate. However, how do you keep the honey and oil from separating while chilling?

Hi Nanci, I’m glad they turned out well! I think just a really strong whisking and then chilling as quickly as possible will help the honey and oil stay incorporated.

I made this recipe using coconut butter for the filling. I also used semisweet chocolate chips for the coating. It was scrumptious! I’m so happy because peppermint patties are one of my favorite candies and (because of all the not-so-healthy ingredients in the generic brand) I haven’t had one for about 5 years! I think they taste exactly like what I remember, and I don’t even have to feel guilty about eating them thanks to the raw honey used as the sweetener. Thanks so much for such a swell recipe!
