Christmas Breakfast Bagels

Well, it’s official. After years and years of my children (and husband) begging for a dog, I finally gave in!  It was intended to be a Christmas present, but she was ready to leave her mom a week ago, and we couldn’t exactly hide it.  My kids were beyond excited!  So, meet our newest member of the family, Honey! She’s a labradoodle, and my husband promised me she won’t shed, so we’ll see!  Anyone have one of these breed’s and find yourself vacuuming constantly?

Now on with our idea of the day: Breakfast bagels.  I had to recruit my adorable nephew to help me with this recipe, and he had a great time. Jam on bagels is delicious, but it’s expensive to buy jam without sugar. Our solution has always been to puree some fruit and use it as jam.  Although it comes out more of the consistency of applesauce, it still works great as a spread.

Step 1

We took one bag of frozen strawberries (with no sugar added to the strawberries), and defrosted it.  You don’t want to use them frozen, or you will have a smoothie instead!  We also drained it of all the water after it defrosted so it wouldn’t be too runny (and that strawberry juice we drained can be added to any fruit juice!! It was super sweet and yummy)

Step 2

We toasted some mini whole wheat bagels and spread some light, spreadable cream cheese on them.

Step 3

We added our strawberry puree to a squeeze bottle (we use squeeze bottles a lot around here) and decorated our Christmas Bagel Ornaments! We added pieces of kiwi to the ornament topper as well.

Thanks for sharing Sharee!! I’m glad you are and your family are getting better in the food department.

I probably wouldn’t keep this “jam” in the fridge for more than a week or so. It’s like applesauce- it’s probably good until you start seeing mold grow 

Sharee says:

I like the idea of using smushed fruit as a jelly! How long would it keep in the squeeze bottle in the fridge? Obviously, not as long as real jam, but it’s nice to have convenience of having it ready and being healthy! 😉
LOVE the simplicity of the recipes, as I’m finding is common to truly healthy food. My boys (4,almost 7) are picking up amazing things when I make our food. It’s shocking how much they pick up even without me directly teaching. I’m getting more confident in the kitchen and the kids are getting more diverse in their eating habits 🙂

I agree – NO dog is hypoallergenic not matter what people tell you. AND people aren’t supposed to wear perfume, but they wear dog & cat hair and for the rest of us that have allergies to animals that can be devastating

Amy says:

Thanks for stopping by Molly-
Eve- good to hear that!!

Eve says:

Hi, we have a Labdoodle (a black one) and she does shed significantly less than any dog I ever had before. We have her shaved (what do you call that in dogs?) every couple of month, otherwise her fur just grows and grows (nobody told us that 😉 ) – that reduces the shedding even more. Our Baby loves her, she is like an interactive babywalker, and baby is NOT full of doghair *g*

Molly C says:

Dont stress too much about the shedding.(humans shed too) I bet your labradoodle shedding will hardly be noticiable. Just happened upon your blog. Thanks for some fresh ideas.

Amy says:

What the heck~?~? You are crazy! Ha ha ha.. Send your new baby over!

I have to say, with my kids the ages they are, it’s actually been really fun! They love her to pieces, they train her, and they take care of her like crazy. I’m glad I gave in 😉

Yum Yucky says:

this is all YOUR fault. After years of resisting, I take one look at your doggy pics and then emailed my hubs that we can get a dog. WHAT HAVE I DONE!!!???? Guess I’ll have to send the pup to doggy daycare at Amy’s house. ha!

(those bagels are so pretty and creative)

Oh wow, that sweet puppy! I know, we got the lab last year too..it’s work but they are so cute and it’s really something to watch your kids show so much compassion to the dog. Our lab sheds so much, maybe this breed is different. Lucky you. Now these bagels, they are like the cutest thing ever. What a great idea!!

Destiny says:

I LOVE this idea! I’m always looking for awesome new things to make for my Daycare kids and this is great! They will have a blast making them and my favorite thing….they’re healthy! Thanks so much!!

Amy says:

Booooo  I was afraid of that. Too bad everyone is in love with her now. lol

I had a feeling my husband was only trying to talk me into getting her with those empty promises..

Cath says:

Bad news… ALL dogs shed. It’s just a question of how much. (And no dog is hypoallergenic, either. Even poodles, which everyone tells me are, but I still have reactions to them.) Honey is adorable, though!
