If I had a nickel for every time someone asked me which was healthier, butter or margarine..I’d be rich. It’s as if no one accepts, “neither are good, so why ask!”
You can make arguements for both sides. Butter contains cholesterol and a high amount of saturated fat, thus making it a poor choice if you don’t like plaque in your arteries. However, most margarines contain an even worse fat (IMHO), trans-fats. So it boils down to reading labels. Choose a spread that is low in saturated fats, and does not contain trans-fats. We all enjoy the taste of butter, spread on a warm, lightly toasted bagel. But you can also get used to the taste of healthier spreads. I like Canola Harvest spread, or Benecol or Take Control. We also like the “I can’t beleive it’s not butter”, spray.
I found some delicious whole wheat french bread at Albertsons to include with our spaghetti dinner. A small spread of canola harvest (tastes like butter but isn’t) and a shake of parmesan. We toasted it in the oven, and the kids devoured it. Cereal boy was really excited when I let him have the last piece of bread. Whatever makes you happy boy!
