Fruits and Vegetables Every Day!
This is my 8 year old niece Maddie. She's super spunky, nutty, and down right entertaining.
This cute girl called me up last Thursday morning (at 6:30AM) to ask me what kinds of fruits and vegetables she could eat for breakfast! She had a few days at school where she kept getting in trouble, and my sister had been tossing around the idea that a healthier breakfast may in fact have a positive impact on her behavior! I may or may not have told her that a million times, but that's besides the point.. (It's hard to take advice from your older sister :) ). However, when my sister told her daughter this, she desperately wanted to give it a go. She truly doesn't want to be naughty at school, but sometimes she finds it super difficult to concentrate.
Studies have shown that kids who eat the recommended amount of fruits and veggies:
- Have a decreased risk for Type 2 diabetes
- Have Improved immunity
- Maintain a healthier weight
- Have better vision and skin
- Have healthier gums and teeth.
- Have more energy to play
- Have a preference for healthier food!
- Have better brain function.
- Have better sleep.
- Plus, live longer!
So, I was excited to help her and made a chart (patterned after our meal planning template). Along with a list of all the fruits and veggies I could think of.
The plan is for her to scan the fruits and vegetables from the list, and add one to each meal, every day of the week. I'll even challenge her to pick a fruit or veggie that she's never tried before!
Print it out and challenge your kids to schedule some new fruits and veggies. Do this as a family and head to the grocery store together!
