Ten Cent Healthy Breakfast

I've been re-reading the book Miserly Mom's after uploading my bank accounts to Quicken and finding out how much we were spending on groceries!  One thing she recommended ten years ago (I have an old copy) was that snacks could be under $0.20 per snack, which I have stuck with for several years.

Secondly she recommends breakfast be under $0.25 per person.  When you are buying a $4.00 ten ounce box of cereal.. each bowl is $0.40. More than the target. Lucky for us however, our eggs are only $0.06 per egg!  Hooray!  Pair that with homemade bread, a tiny bit of lettuce and tomato, and we've got ourselves a filling, healthy, ten cent breakfast!  (with store bought bread from the Bread outlet, we get our bread ten cents per slice)

poached eggs 2 This is our poached eggs.  Super easy and quick to make.

  • Break an egg into a shallow bowl.
  • Boil water in pot with 1 TBL vinegar
  • Pour slowly in a pot of simmering water (boil the water, and then turn down to a simmer.
  • Cook for 3-4 minutes or until whites are set, and yolk begins to thicken.

Healthy eating does not have to be expensive.  And this next month I hope to stay within my food budget to prove it :)
Want me to be totally honest and transparent here?  I budget $500 per month for food (family of 5).  Last month I spent $837!!  In my defense, I was super busy with school and did not shop the sales like I should.

What's your budget for food??

I've never broken the price down per serving. I'll have to try that to see where I come in. Our grocery budget is $300/mth for a family of 3. It's reasonable since I'm a stay at home mom and can take time to shop the ads and check for online specials and go to 3 different stores for the best deals. We get the grocery money out of the atm on pay day and then whatever I don't use I get to keep. So there's more incentive to be smart. I've already told my husband if/when I go back to working outside the home, there'll be none of this best price witch hunt. It's like having a part-time job sometimes. Good for you!

I spend that much every month on food! Ugh. I have to work on this.

Wow! Thanks for the wakeup call. I haven't budgeted for food for years. I had no idea how much we spend. I just went through my online bank records and found that I spent $722 last month for food for our family of 7. That included eating out and walmart- which may have had some non-food items. That's half a house payment! Crazy!

I have a family of 5 and we spend about $525 on months with 5 Mondays and about $450 on months with 4 Mondays (or whatever day I am currently grocery shopping). I'm glad to see you are around the same. Sometimes I feel like I spend to much! So, thanks for the validation!

I can't bring myself to fess up to our food budget. It's a lot! But, groceries are more expensive here, and I'm a sucker for good produce - no matter the cost. We're pretty stingy in most areas of our life, but not with food.

I always overspend massively on fresh herbs to cook with - otherwise I guess I am quite cheap!

I am also a stay at home mom, so are budget is tight. Our budget is 400.00 a month and we are a family of 5. I do a lot of coupon clipping, and I don't buy anything that's not on sale.I am also involved in a organic food coop so I get all of our fruits and veggies organically grown pretty cheap.

We are a family of 5...and we consistently spend $700-900. Yikes! I cook alot, but we eat out at least once a week...date night and sometimes I take the kids out during our weekly field trip. Maybe I will try and pack lunches this next month and see how we do.

So often speed and convience dictate how and what we feed our children. But we are seeing more health related consequences because of it Good content on snack foods - we are fortunate that our children love apples and bananas. They also love Grenola, Oatmeal, and other health breakfasts. Eggs are always a good option. But of course they love candy as well and sometimes try to, without success, to have candy for breakfast. It is always a battle. Check out the following: 10 Disastrous Foods for Children http://www.iahealth.net/10-disastrous-foods-for-children

I recommend to put "Kampot pepper" on the eggs, so delicious! If you never heard about this pepper, you inquire.

I love Miserly Mom's (though I think her price for a snack has gone up, I have a newer version). We budget $235 a month for food for our family of 4 (two little boys). We eat a good amount of whole grains and fruits and vegetables, though I'd like to see the vegetable count slightly higher than it is.
