Road Trip Healthy Snacks

TUESDAY: Whole Grains

We drove from Utah County to St. George, Utah yesterday. It's spring break for us, and we wanted to get some warm weather hiking in.  Eating healthy can be tricky on the road, but this is what we brought:

p4120137-wince

  • Raisins
  • Cuties
  • Sugar Snap Peas
  • Bananas
  • Apples
  • Trail mix (nuts)
  • Animal Crackers
  • And a homemade treat!  This is the reason I'm filing this under whole grains.  I made my Low Fat Oatmeal cookies.  Then with the help of the flip flopper, we added:
  1. Sesame seeds
  2. Dried pineapple chunks
  3. Unsweetened dried cranberries
  4. slivered almonds
  5. and chopped dates

They turned out delicious!!! And how much better does that taste than a package of cheap licorice at the gas station.

What do you bring on a road trip thats healthy? (and your kids will eat of course)

Have fun in nice warm St. George (that is where I live). I hope it is a nice warm week... and have to say can't wait for you Utah County people to go home so our traffic will go away! :) j/k, kind of :) We bring about the same on a road trip- apples, bananas, almonds, peanut butter balls, string cheese, type of cracker. Have a good vacation!

We bring sandwiches- they are simple, easy, and the kids love them. Also carrot sticks, apples, oranges, applesauce (the no sugar added kind), and last time I made your peanut butter balls- I used a rice mold to shape them into bear heads- they turned out adorable!

We also add pretzels, tree top fruit snacks (still like candy, I know) baby carrots and dry cereal! YUM! (I think half of UC will be joining you in St. George! RU doing the Sand Hollow triathlon?)

How inspiring! Good healthy snacks. Often when we go on road trips, I'm so busy packing luggage, that I poop out and just buy those icky cheap packaged snacks (unhealthy!). Your additions to the oatmeal cookies make them sound AWESOME!! A great idea, that I'll definitely try!

Your snacks look very healthy. What will you have for dinner? That's the one that stumps me on the road, because it's always fast food stuff nearby, so I'm real curious how you have healthy dinners on the road.

Thanks that is a great post! It helps to plan better when I have ideas like that.

We do the usual fruits (clementines are my favorite in the car), string cheese, wheat thins, and yogurt covered raisins and nuts are my kids special treats they always pick out at the store when they get to choose. I love the idea of the oatmeal cookies and peanut butter balls. I have to say your carrot muffins are loved as much as b-day cake by everyone in my family. We gobble up all of them in a day, with or without frosting. I would take them on a trip in a heartbeat if they weren't crumbly in my car. :)

I made your oatmeal cookies last night--yum yum! Thanks so much for all your great ideas!

My hubby hunts. We make jerky, like trail mixes and fresh fruits! We head to Cloudcroft NM, go fishing in the summer or take horses. Awesome :) Have a great weekend.

This is great! My family is taking a short trip(Wed., Thurs., Fri., Sat.) and we really hate having to stop at fast food places...any ideas for lunches for men? As in, a hungry papa and two growing boys. Because I'm not sure they'll be on board with eating nuts and fruit and muffins! I guess we could always just buy a ready-made chicken but we're trying to go cheaply...anyways, ideas would be really helpful. :)

Oh, and one thing I absolutely love for breakfast and lunch on a trip is granola(or muesli) and yogurt. Yum! It's easy, fairly cheap, and has protein...anyways. I think that's all I have to say now! :)

That's a tough one Abby! I can't remember if I wrote this in the post, but we have stopped at grocery stores for our meals on trips. Especially grocery stores that provide a deli or salad bar. Often they will have chicken, potatoes, different salads, you know! The only problem is we end up eating in the car when we do that. They also can head over to the produce department, grab a bag of pretzels or beef jerky, and then a drink from the juice aisle. Interestingly, on that trip (it was during spring break), I ate better than I ever have. At a restaurant I got a veggie omelet. I packed apples and nuts for our hikes. At a pizza joint I got the salad bar. I truly haven't been on a vacation in a long time that I felt BETTER after getting home, and not like I needed to go on a diet.

One more thing. I keep trying really hard to get out of the mind set that we needed a ton of snack food IN the car. It's just so messy, and without moving (walking around) we really shouldn't need that much to eat, right? It just makes a huge mess anyway. :) I feel like we snack all day, we stop for meals and its just one big eating fest. Certainly we can survive on eating less often.
