Fancy French Tartines for Your Tots
I visited France as a teenager with some friends serving in the Military! What a gorgeous country! We actually traveled all over Europe the summer before my senior year, and I do remember the food. What can I say, I've always liked food. My favorite food in Europe was Belgium waffles in Belgium, but bread and cheese in France was second for sure.
One easy and delicious food I remember from France was French Tartines. Tartines are simply an open faced sandwich with a spread and toppings. A soft cheese works well, and the toppings can range from sweet to savory. Tartines are great party food, after school snack, or pre-dinner appetizers.
To keep these healthy, we used
- whole wheat French bread - because we're in France today, afterall.
- Light Cream Cheese
- Fresh fruits and vegetables to top it with.
Knowing ahead of time how my kids would respond, I kept out toppings to one on each piece of toast.
Step 1) Slice whole wheat bread into 1 inch pieces
Step 2) Arrange on baking sheet and toast lightly in the oven, about 5 or less minutes.
Step 3) Spread light cream cheese on each piece of toast.
Step 4) Top with your kids favorite fruits or vegetables. We used:
- Strawberries and mint
- Pears
- Avocado
- Mushrooms
- Red Peppers
- and peaches
Can you believe it? After months of protesting being a food model, TJ finally let me take a picture of him eating this one.
