Celery Juice- A Nerve Tonic

Did you know celery was used for medicinal purposes before it was a food?  I started looking into it after my Grandma gave us this old medicine bottle.  I think it’s pretty awesome!  If you look up close, it gives all the benefits of celery (as they knew back in the day.)

It says:  A reliable laxative and diuretic.  It restores strength, renews vitality, purifies the blood, regulates the Kidneys, Liver, and Bowels.  A positive cure for Rheumatism, Blood disorders, stomach troubles, Liver and kidney complaints, malaria, indigestion, dyspespia, constipation, catarrh, Heart trouble, scrofula, neuralgia, etc.  FEMALE WEAKNESS and Irregularities promptly relieved and permanently cured.

I think it’s hilarious that FEMALE WEAKNESS is in all caps.  I love old things like that.  My husband has some very old medical books with crazy cures for everything. But this I know, once my kids start complaining of cararrh, I’ll be pulling out the celery.

Our adventures in celery:

I figured the best way to get some real benefits of concentrated celery ( the real benefits being immune support and blood pressure regulation) is to juice it!  We borrowed my sisters (Queen Bee Online Mother) juicer.

Something else you could do with the juice is add it to vegetable soup.  My friend Eliece makes this and decided a good plan would be to juice a bunch of celery and freeze it in small portions for when she makes the soup.  Then she doesn’t have to get a juicer out every time she wants to make soup!  Great Idea Eliece!!

Our favorite celery juice recipe that you can find in my new 201 Smoothies and Juices book is called “cool as a cucumber”:

  • 1 cucumber
  • 2 cups  red sweet cherries, pitted
  • 2 celery stalks (leaves intact)

Other celery ideas:

  • Add the celery juice to smoothies!

What do you think?  Will your kids try some celery juice?

I find this interesting. I have heard of theories that you should eat what your body craves because your body knows what you need (there would be exceptions of course- no one NEEDS sugar and fried foods). My 5 year old has a few of those problems you listed and her FAVORITE vegetable is celery!! Long explanation but it made a lot of sense to me. Thanks– I have been thinking about getting a juicer and this just makes me want one more.

Hmm… Interesting! Not sure if we will try celery juice, but my kids do enjoy eating celery with peanut butter.

I was told once though that celery is a NEGATIVE calorie food, in that it takes more calories to burn off than there are in the food.

I found your site after googling “celery nerve tonic” I have a recipe box my grandmother put together for me and it has a “Celery Nerve Tonic Soup!” in it. Interesting! We should start prescribing soup instead of xanax! lol

Hilarious! I’ve been meaning to reply to you. I love that my site came up for those words 🙂
I’ll get a prescription pad and put a soup recipe on it, what do you think?? lol

Juicing is fantastic. Most modern ailments can be cured by a natural diet. I usually juice a few sticks of celery, a couple apples, a tomato, a bit of ginger and a kiwi or carrot. After a couple days of weaning off fast/unhealthy food and subbing 2 meals with juice, I noticed a massive increase in my energy and overall happiness. Juicing is great!

Thanks Matt! I just watched yesterday Fat, sick, and nearly dead. Have you seen it? He went on a 60 day juicing fast and literally was able to get off meds and get his life back!

I have been doing the celery with a apple add berries and carrots , I lost 15 lbs in 2 weeks . and Have been weaning off of my pain meds , I had chronic nack pain and neck pain , Since doing the juicing my pain is managable ,

I read an article that celery juice will help with high blood pressure. After reading these comments about weight loss etc., think I will buy a juicer and give it a whirl. I hate taking my BP meds and they are expensive!!

ok, this is a dumb quesiton, but i found a whole bunch of organic celery in the back of my frig. It has lost its green essence. but i’m wondering if it would still make juice, and if it does, would the life force be gone anyway. I hate to waste any produce, let alone my beautiful organic celery. love that bottle BTW, and you site came up when i googled ‘can i juice old celery’. 🙂

Haha!! I love when people find this post! Seriously, it’s one of my favorite posts of all time! And yes, juice the old celery! It’s the best way to get rid of old produce. There are still plenty of nutrients in old veggies.

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple WordPress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That’s right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin

Hi Connie, as a pediatric dietitian, I would recommend limit a toddlers juice intake to no more than 4-6 ounces a day. Choosing whole foods and water, over juices, are always your best options.

Celery juice protocol as suggested by Anthony Williams the Medical Medium should be taken on its own and first thing in the morning on rising, 15 to 30 minutes before breakfast. Adding other ingredients stops the celery juice working on your body. Full benefits are obtained from straight celery juice. 16ozs every morning is the recommended start up amount. It has helped me a lot, I can wholeheartedly recommend it. He has written a book entirely on how celery juice can heal your body and keep the liver healthy.
